AI Blogging. A Perfect Imperfection?

Twice this morning I’ve read posts in my WordPress reader that were obviously written by an AI program. The person noted as the author may have come up with the idea but the construction and general writing is straight out of the AI handbook.

I like writing my own posts, they’re my thoughts and experiences. I sometimes get lost in the moment and go off on a tangent, a lot of what I write may be considered garbage. I’m not a writer. But it’s stuff that’s in my head, and spilling into my blog unfiltered.

I feel I’m at the point where if I see perfect spelling, meticulous grammar and yes the use of an em dash, it flags it as AI and I lose interest.

Years ago someone told me that if Google saw the use of incorrect grammar, the odd spelling mistake or even a malapropism it ranked your website higher because it was proof it was human content. That however is urban legend. But if that was true it’s never been so needed as it is today.

So that’s my imperfect rant. Written by me. A non-writer. Just a guy with some stories to tell. And written as imperfectly as life is meant to be.

AI would probably at this point tell me to end this post with, “Do you embrace your imperfections? Tell me about it in the comments.”

Disclaimer: I do use AI to create my thumbnails, there’s no way I could come up with that stuff!

The best friend you could ever have

Daily writing prompt
What animals make the best/worst pets?

Personally, I think the best pet is the one that becomes your best buddy. And that can be any animal. For me, it was the story of how he became mine.

My story begins one day when I went to a specialist junkyard looking for parts for an older Mercedes-Benz R107. Second-hand spares for these can be hard to come by, so sometimes you have to go digging through the yards yourself.

While I was on my hands and knees under one of these cars, I spotted a little Jack Russell chewing on a half eaten rubber ball. He was tucked away, keeping his distance from the yard owner’s two kids, who were being a bit too rough with him.

He noticed me and paused, trying to decide if I was a threat. I’ve always had a soft spot for dogs, so I made it clear I wasn’t there to harm him.

Slowly, cautiously, he came over and let me fuss him. That was all it took.

I carried on pulling the parts I needed, but from that moment on I wasn’t working alone. He stayed close, either sat between my legs while I was on the ground or right in my way as I crouched over stubborn fasteners.

After about an hour, it was time to leave. He wasn’t letting me out of his sight.

When I went to pay, the owner laughed and said I’d made a friend.

He told me the dog had wandered into the yard after being left on the streets, and he didn’t really know what to do with him.

So Ben came home with me that day.

He came to work with me every day for the next nine years. He was always there; through the good days, the frustrating ones, and everything in between.

He passed away almost two years ago now, and he left a huge hole behind. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about him.

So I don’t think there’s a single “best” pet. Just one you’ll never forget.

What job would you do for free

Daily writing prompt
What job would you do for free?

It’s a difficult one to answer, because taken literally, working for free doesn’t make much sense.

There’s too much tied up in it; time, tools, spare parts. experience.

Hectic Mornings Ensure A Smooth Workday

Daily writing prompt
What are your morning rituals? What does the first hour of your day look like?

My mornings have the same routine, I pull in the first car that’s in for service and give it an initial check to see if I need extra parts.

Depending on the day I may have to do this a few times.

I try to get as many parts on the first order as possible.

Everything Should Be a Sandwich

Daily writing prompt
If you could have something named after you, what would it be?

Today’s prompt is an easy one. A sandwich. Plain and simple just an ordinary sandwich.

Nothing special. No crazy ingredients. I just like sandwiches. I love making everything into a sandwich. When I plan dinner, one of the first questions is, can this become tomorrow’s sandwich?

What makes you laugh?

You know the one. A customer gets a quote, decides it’s not for them, and goes off to sort it themselves or maybe finds someone cheaper.

Fair enough. I get it. Money’s tight, YouTube makes everything look straightforward, and how hard can it really be?

What’s something most people don’t understand?

When it comes to my job there’s a long list of things that people don’t understand.

I guess that’s why there’s a lot of stories of people being caught out by unscrupulous mechanics.

I don’t really know what the answer to that problem is.

The only thing I can say is you need to find a technician or mechanic you can trust.

I realize that’s easier said than done.

Saying no for a better work life

Daily writing prompt
How often do you say “no” to things that would interfere with your goals?

This is something I’ve only recently started doing, saying no to jobs because they don’t fit either my schedule or my niche.

But I’ve learned the hard way. I would never say no to any work. I think it’s something ingrained from being completely broke financially, you never want to go back to that so you’re afraid to turn anything down.

What’s a secret skill or ability you have or wish you had?

I’m not convinced I have a secret skill, what I do have is patience in the way I approach my work and that gives me an ability to solve problems. Diagnosing cars is really about solving problems.

Even if it’s just a noise when your car is turning a corner, a mechanics mind will go into diagnosis mode. We can see mechanical components in our minds, we see them moving and can visualize how that noise might be happening.

Dry Weather Is a Mechanic’s Best Friend

Daily writing prompt
What is your favorite type of weather?

This is honestly an easy answer for a mechanic. Dry weather in any form is usually the best, temperature permitting of course because I can’t think of anything worse than snow, ice or dirty water dripping down my neck and under my shirt.

Im struggling to make this daily prompt car related without making it sound cliché.

I could say I wish there were more hours in the day so I could work on more cars, but seriously, even if you’re very committed to your job – which I am – you don’t want extra time so you can do more work.

Daily writing prompt
What was the best compliment you’ve received?

In this business the best compliment you can receive is a returning customer.

Getting to work on someone’s pride and joy is definitely the highest compliment you can be paid.

Getting lost in the moment

Daily writing prompt
What activities do you lose yourself in?

Sometimes when a car comes into the workshop that has intriguing problems and an owner who’s invested in getting the issues sorted, I can get involved to a level where nothing else matters. I’ll put on some music and just get totally emersed.

There’s just nothing better just for the pure satisfaction it brings.
