It’s a difficult one to answer, because taken literally, working for free doesn’t make much sense.
There’s too much tied up in it; time, tools, spare parts. experience.
But in an ideal world, if I could do a job for free, it would still be this one. I enjoy being a mechanic. I enjoy figuring things out, getting to the bottom of a problem, and putting something right.
That said, experience has taught me that free work is rarely valued. More is expected, and what’s given often isn’t seen as enough.
